Georgia Power to bring solar to Army bases

ATLANTA — Georgia Power announced Thursday it will build, own and operate solar generation facilities — each capable of producing approximately 30 megawatts — at Fort Stewart, Fort Benning and Fort Gordon.

The sites are expected to be finished by the end of 2016, the company said, and will be the largest solar generating facilities operating on any U.S. military bases.

As part of the review and approval of the company’s 2007 Integrated Resource Plan, the Georgia Public Service Commission approved the development of three renewable projects of less than 30 megawatts to be owned by Georgia Power and to cost no more than other sources would.

Georgia Power’s announcement said the company expects to bring more than 500 new solar projects online in the coming years.

Dasan Machineries, a Korea-based manufacturer, will invest $30 million over the next three years to build a plant in Gwinnett County and create 150 jobs, Gov. Nathan Deal announced Thursday.

The Duluth-based facility will be the company’s first headquarters in the U.S. The company will use high-precision machinery to manufacture components for the automotive and defense industries at this new location.

Dasan Machineries producers high-quality steel parts and components for the defense, auto and avionic industries.

Hiring for the new facility has begun. Interested candidates should email dasan@dasanusa.com.
