SV Pittie Textiles, a leading India-based textile manufacturer, broke ground Monday for a planned $70 million facility near Sylvania. The plant, which will be located in Screven County Industrial Park, will employ 250 people when it’s fully operational.

Construction is expected to begin this year, with the jobs phased in over the next four years.

Among those on hand to toss the first shovels of dirt were Gov. Nathan Deal, Chris Carr, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, and Vinod Pittie, chairman of Shrivallabh Pittie Group.

In welcoming the textile giant to Georgia, Deal credited their announcement last October with playing a role in Georgia winning Site Selection Magazine’s “Most Competitive State” for 2013.

“Shrivallabh Pittie Group’s decision to build its first U.S. facility in Georgia underscores our attractive infrastructure and diverse talent pool,” he said.

Founded in 1898, Shrivallabh Pittie Group has a substantial presence in the Indian textile sector, operating in 13 locations.

Pittie said the project will be the biggest single investment in the U.S. cotton yarn sector in decades.

“We believe there is a significant market opportunity for yarn manufacturing in Georgia due to a skilled local workforce, proximity to high-quality cotton fiber, the economical supply and reliability of power and world-class infrastructure to international markets,” he said.

“We are proud to generate 250 new U.S. jobs and to bring a positive economic effect on the local area and its rich cotton textile heritage.”

The new facility will feature class-leading machinery, utilizing synergies between the new plant and the company’s existing textile operations, including technical

expertise and a global network for sales and marketing, Pittie said, adding that production will be flexible to meet market demand.

Screven County Development Authority chairman Bobby Smith thanked everyone involved, from the governor to Screven County and the city of Sylvania, for working together to make the project happen.

“This was a great day for Screven County,” Smith said. “The investment SV Pittie Textiles is making in our community means 250 new jobs for our friends and neighbors.

“I’m proud to be part of a community and a state that means business when it comes to attracting jobs.”

The Screven County Industrial Park is certified as a Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development site, one of more than 30 GRAD sites around the state that offer advanced due diligence for industrial development.

The company will also take advantage of the services of Georgia Quick Start, a state program that will provide the company with free, customized workforce training and development.

The company will manufacture a range of different counts of carded cotton yarn.
