Number of underwater Savannah mortgages declines
A report Thursday by CoreLogic, a real estate information reporting firm, indicates 12.8 percent of all greater Savannah residential properties with mortgages — 7,113 residences — were in negative equity as of the third quarter of 2014.
That compares to 14.6 percent, or 8,074 properties, in the second quarter of 2014.
An additional 5.2 percent, or 2,895 residential properties, were in near negative equity for third quarter of 2014 compared to 5.5 percent, or 3,037, in second quarter of 2014.
Overall, nearly 273,000 U.S. homes returned to positive equity in the third quarter of 2014, bringing the number of mortgaged residential properties with equity to approximately 44.6 million, or 90 percent of all mortgaged properties.
Nationwide, borrower equity increased year over year by approximately $800 billion in the third quarter.
Women engineers plan event, offer scholarship
The Society of Women Engineers for the Savannah Coastal Empire is inviting students in grades 6-12 to attend the fourth annual ‘Girls Engineer It Day’ on Feb. 21.
Attendance is limited to the first 100 middle school students and the first 100 high school students who register.
The event will be 1 to 5:30 p.m. at the Woodville-Tompkins Tech and Career HighSchool, 151 Coach Joe Turner St.

The organization also will award a $1,000 scholarship for the 2015-2016 school year. Students must meet the following requirements to apply:
• Female enrolled in her senior year of high school.

• Resident of Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, Long or McIntosh counties.

Chamber to host hockey classic business connection
The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its annual Savannah Tire Hockey Classic Business Connection from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Savannah Civic Center.
The business connection will be in conjunction with the first game of the hockey classic between the Citadel and the University of South Carolina, which begins at 7 p.m. Attendees can watch the game at ice level, with beverages, networking and catering from Outback Steakhouse.
Admission is $15 for members, $30 for guests and will include a ticket to the game. Parking is free.
