The Wilmington Island Kroger, one of Savannah’s first Kroger grocery stores, will get a multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion, with work scheduled to begin in August.
“Kroger has served the Wilmington Island community for years,” said Glynn Jenkins, public relations director for Kroger in Atlanta.
“As we continue to remodel stores to suit the unique needs of our customers, we are renovating the Wilmington Island location to deliver the products, amenities and lower prices our customers appreciate,” Jenkins said.
The expansion will add 33,000 square feet, taking in several empty stores adjacent to the current footprint and bringing the store to a total of 75,000 square feet.
The renovated store will feature new décor, upscale elements in the service departments, an expanded grocery department, a Murray’s Cheese shop, upgraded Starbucks, expanded bakery and deli, expanded meat and seafood service, a sushi island and an expanded natural foods department.
The store will also have a wine tasting center.
When complete, the project is expected to bring 85 to 100 new jobs to the island.
Construction is expected to take a little more than a year, during which time the store will remain open with normal business hours, Jenkins said.
Kroger came into the Savannah market when it purchased 11 stores from M&M Super Markets Inc. in 1985, including the Wilmington Island location.
While the store has been remodeled several times during its 30 years under the Kroger brand, this is the first major expansion, Jenkins said.
“Expanding the store along with other improvements will offer even more choices and convenience for our customers,” he said.
