Business in Savannah in brief

Gas prices stable in metro Savannah

Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have fallen 1 cent per gallon in the past week to $2.30 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah.

The national average has fallen 2.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.43, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Prices Sunday in Savannah were $1.02.9 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 15.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 18 cents per gallon during the last month and stands $1.09.3 cents per gallon lower than one year ago.

GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan said crude oil prices closed last week near their January lows on news of plentiful crude oil inventories, which may begin to weigh on gasoline prices, once refineries conclude maintenance and throttle up utilization rates.

“In the end, it could mean even lower gasoline prices for motorists during the summer than GasBuddy previously expected, barring other refinery issues or unpredictable issues,” DeHaan said.

9 Memorial Health physician practices recognized

The National Committee for Quality Assurance has announced that nine Memorial Health University physicians’ primary care practices have received patient-centered medical home recognition for using evidence-based, patient-centered processes that focus on highly coordinated care and long-term participative relationships.

The practices, which are located in Savannah, Wilmington Island, Richmond Hill, Rincon and Bluffton, S.C., received the organization’s highest level of distinction.

The patient-centered medical home concept is a model of primary care that combines teamwork and information technology to improve care, improve patients’ experience of care and reduce costs.

Patient care is overseen by clinician-led teams that coordinate treatment across the healthcare system.

“This recognition reinforces Memorial Health’s commitment to patients and their families,” said Thomas J. Hogan Jr.,chair of Memorial’s primary care steering committee.

Mouth-shield program accepting applications

Angela Canfield of Sandfly Family Dental is accepting applications for the 2015 Canfield mouth-shield program, which will provide custom-fit mouth guards for one local sports team.

Last year, Canfield donated maroon and white mouth guards to the Benedictine Military School football team,

“I choose to donate the gear because research shows that wearing custom-fit mouth guards reduces the risk of severe injuries,” Canfield said.

The mouth guards have a 1-year warranty, which covers dental expenses if players are injured while wearing the mouth guards.

Applications must be submitted before June 1. For more information or to apply, go to http://www.sandflyfamilydental.com/community/.
