Leukemia society forms new committee

The Savannah Office of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Georgia Chapter has announced five local business leaders will make up a new Leadership Committee for Savannah.

The committee will be chaired by Ruth Bartlett, an LLS board member, and will include Craig Meyer, current Leukemia Cup Regatta chair; Celeste Shearouse, current Light The Night Walk chair; Mark Shawe, past Leukemia Cup Regatta chair; and Steve Eagle, past Light The Night Walk chair.

In addition, the 2014 Man & Woman of the Year chair, when named, will sit on the committee.

The Savannah office of the society hosts multiple fundraising events annually, and the organization said the new committee was set up to bring together the leaders of each event.

This year’s Savannah Light The Night Walk is expected to draw nearly 2,000 participants with a goal of raising $220,000 for LLS.

Kids Cafe gets grant from Food Lion foundation

The Food Lion Charitable Foundation presented a check for $2,500 to America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia Wednesday to help support the organization’s Kids Cafe, a nationally recognized program that originated in Savannah.

It’s designed to help at-risk children achieve physically and academically, and participating children are served hot, balanced evening meals in safe, nurturing sites where they also receive tutoring and mentoring.

Food Lion’s foundation was established in 2001 to provide financial support to eliminate hunger through Feeding America and United Way member agencies in communities in the 11 states that Food Lion serves.

Mary Jane Crouch, executive director of America’s Second Harvest, said the foundation supports the nonprofit through various programs “making a difference for people in need in Coastal Georgia.”
